Before building Jaspr, my background was in air quality consulting and hazardous material clean-up. In 2016, I was in Fort McMurray restoring heavily smoke damaged homes after the wildfires. We had just finished cleaning and restoring a young family’s home. A toddler, an infant, mom, and dad had all been living in a tiny hotel room after being evacuated from their house. And the moment that we finally got them back into their home is a moment I’ll never forget.
But it didn’t last. One week after we finished restoring the home, we got a call about the young family we had moved back in. Their baby was in the hospital. And that news hit us like a ton of bricks. We thought we had done everything we could to make that house safe. We had tested the air quality before we signed off, and everything was fine. What could possibly have gone wrong? We went back and re-tested the air, and found it was indeed heavily contaminated.
This was on me….
We later worked out that when you have a regional fire of that magnitude, the air quality stays contaminated for months. That means the home just keeps getting re-contaminated again and again. The insurance company said their job was done, and there was nothing they could do. But there was something I could do. I had one option: to get to the bottom of this, and make it right.
Finally, we found a solution. If we kept 3 large HEPA scrubbers in the home, it carried out enough air changes per hour to keep the VOCs and PM2.5 at a level where the family could safely occupy the home. After talking to people who lived in the local area, we learned that this wasn’t just a problem for the family we were helping. It was a huge issue for everyone. People who should have been fit and healthy were struggling just to take a breath.
After everything I had learned, I knew I could do something to change the situation. And so my journey began. I started working on building an air purifier that would keep people safe – and not make them bankrupt. We focused on developing a device with the strength of an industrial air scrubber and the style of a Dyson, while also maintaining a whisper-quiet like a Tesla. Now, a mission that started with wildfire pollution has become so much more. My experience has shown me that everything we think about air is wrong.
Clean air is a right, not a privilege.
We’re on a mission that goes far beyond making air purifiers. We’re on a mission to educate the world about the role air quality plays as the 4th pillar of health. I really hope you’ll join me on this mission. Together, we can help everyone access the clean air they deserve.
